On May 10, 2022, the RSA Board of Directors approved this policy that retired 20 legacy new item types and replaced them with a standardized, more focused set of item types for new materials. This policy also established maximum time limits how long an item may be considered new by a public versus a school library. On January 8, 2026, the RSA Board of Directors approved this standard that expands on the New Materials Item Types Policy approved by the RSA Board of Directors in January 2026. This standard establishes the use of a more focused set of item types for new materials, creates maximum time limits how long an item may be considered new, and outlines the bulk conversion process that RSA will perform annually to ensure items do not remain new longer than is permitted.
